Cathedral Stone Supports Boy Scout’s Quest to Preserve Pieces of History

Donated D/2 Biological Solution used to restore historic cemetery in Hope, Indiana

Hanover, Md. – December 5, 2008 - When Boy Scout Timothy Bernier of Nineveh, Indiana recently set out to restore historic Civil and Spanish American war markers in his local cemetery, Cathedral Stone Products was happy to lend a hand, in the form of a five-gallon bucket of D/2 Biological Solution.

Bernier’s project, part of his quest to become an Eagle Scout, involved the cleaning and restoration of 25 Civil War markers and 2 Spanish American War markers in the Moravian Cemetery in Hope, Indiana.

After identifying the markers, assessing their condition, and determining their repair needs, Bernier visited www.cathedralstone.com as part of research on cleaning solutions. He was impressed by the video of D/2 Biological Solution being applied to the grave markers at the U.S. Naval Academy, and selected the easy-to-use product for his project as a safe, environmentally-friendly alternative to ammonia or bleach.

“I wanted to be conservation-minded and find a product that would not damage the gravestones or the surrounding area,” said Bernier of his choice to use D/2 Biological Solution.

Before D/2 Biological Solution was used to clean this marker, it was covered with unsightly biological growth.

Cathedral Stone, which created D/2 Biological Solution in conjunction with Simple Green, offered to donate the five-gallon bucket as part of ongoing community initiatives.

Following an initial cleaning with water and plastic scrapers, the D/2 Biological Solution was able to reach deep into the crevices and pores of the marker stones to remove deep-set stains and organic matter. Bernier and his team then used cordless drills and nylon brush heads for additional cleaning where necessary.

Upon project completion, Bernier visited the Indiana Historical Society and conducted extensive online research to learn more about the soldiers whose names had become clear on the cleaned markers. He created a tribute notebook containing each soldier’s date of birth and death, military career information, interesting facts, and before/after pictures of the cleaned stones.

“Through this project, I learned how to research people’s lives and how to honor them in life and death,” Bernier said.
